Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove met with top officials of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) to discuss the establishment of a full interchange at Garden State Parkway Exit 40 – Route 30 connector. In attendance were Galloway Mayor Don Purdy, Galloway Deputy Mayor Anthony J. Coppola, Jr., and Atlantic County At-Large Freeholder Alex Marino.

“The intent of holding this meeting was to apprise the Turnpike Authority of the strong public support for a full interchange at Exit 40 as well as to have the opportunity for local officials to provide input on how best to move forward,” said Senator Connors. “The Turnpike Authority was attentive to the points raised and informed us that its engineers would take a fresh look at its original study of establishing a full interchange at the Exit, which is outdated given the significant changes to the area over the years. There was also discussion about examining the design of the current Parkway widening project, especially the bridge design over Route 30, with an eye toward preparing for a full interchange project at Exit 40.”

Committee Advances 9th District Measure Allowing Cancellation of Diminutive Municipal Charges & Fees

Legislation sponsored by Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove that would expand the power of a municipality to cancel a delinquent charge or fee owed to it, provided that the fee was less than $10, was passed by the Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee.

“Given the small monetary amounts involved, this is a common sense proposal aimed at alleviating an unnecessary mandate placed on municipalities, especially those with small workforces,” said Senator Connors. “Essentially, tracking down these diminutive fees are not worth the time and costs involved, but municipalities are still required to so under existing law. In a time of severe budget restraints, municipal resources could certainly be more effectively utilized to address more important matters.”

The State Senate has passed legislation introduced by Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove that would end the practice of taxpayers having to cover the costs incurred when banks impose service charges for returned or “bounced” checks written by residents to municipalities and counties.

Under current law, the service fee imposed by a municipality or county cannot exceed $20 per check. The 9th District Delegation’s legislative initiative (S-1042/A-673) would allow municipalities and counties to impose a service charge for the returned check up to, but not to exceed, the usual customary service charge of the commercial banking institution where the municipality deposits its checks.
