Connors, Rumpf & Gove on Oyster Creek Announcement: Time to Develop Decommissioning Process

In light of the announcement by Exelon, the operator of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Facility, that the company will cease operations at the facility in 2019, Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove are calling for immediate action on their legislation (S-866/A-296) that would establish a New Jersey Coordinating Council on the Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Generating Facilities.

In response to today’s announcement, the 9th District delegation immediately wrote to Governor Chris Christie asking for the Administration’s support for their legislation that was initially introduced in January of 2004. In its letter to the Governor, the delegation emphasized their concerns regarding the potential economic and environmental impact that facility’s closure would have on the local area.

9th District Delegation Strongly Conveys Its Opposition to Any Consideration of Exit Toll

9th District Legislators Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove met with Executive Director Veronique Hakim and other officials of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to discuss the prospect of building a park-n-ride off of Garden State Parkway Exit 58 for commuters as well as plans for infrastructure improvements at the Exit to address existing traffic problems.

Ocean County Freeholder Jack Kelly and Little Egg Harbor Mayor Ray Gormley also attended the meeting which was held at the 9th District Legislators’ Office.  Senator Connors, Assemblyman Rumpf and Assemblywoman Gove issued the following statement regarding their meeting with the Turnpike.

Action Taken on Connors, Rumpf & Gove Measure to Create State Contract Set-Aside Program for Veteran-Owned Businesses

The Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee today approved legislation (S-2314) sponsored by Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove of the 9th Legislative District that would establish a set-aside program whereby three percent of all State contracts would be set aside for veteran-owned businesses.

The 9th District Delegation’s measure was amended in Committee to incorporate recommendations brought forth by the New Jersey American Legion.

Committee Advances Connors, Rumpf & Gove Measure to Create State Contract Set-Aside Program for Veteran-Owned Businesses

The Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee today released legislation (A-3308) sponsored by Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove of the 9th Legislative District that would establish a set-aside program whereby three percent of all State contracts would be set aside for veteran-owned businesses.

The 9th District Legislators released the following statement regarding the Committee’s advancement of their veteran initiative:

“With all that they have given to our country, it would be appropriate for our state to ensure that veteran-owned businesses are offered the first opportunity to secure a certain percentage of State government contracts.

Any attempt by other interests to downplay the severity of our state’s fiscal crisis both in the short and long term should be met with skepticism and ire.

Gove, representing the 9th legislative district, issued the following statement in reaction to recent media reports that Governor Christie plans to reduce the size of the state workforce by 1,200 come January 2011 as a means of balancing the state budget:

“Given the severity of our state’s fiscal problems, which are a direct consequence of years of reckless spending by Trenton and the ongoing economic recession, it should be a surprise to no one that the Administration is looking to downsize a government bureaucracy that the majority of state residents neither want nor can afford any longer.

Connors, Rumpf & Gove Call for Action on Domestic Violence Legislation

9th District legislators Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove are urging for consideration of their legislation to combat domestic violence and enhance protections for victims.

In a letter to the chairs of the Senate and Assembly Judiciary Committees, the 9th District legislators formally requested their legislation, S-115/A-299, which would require courts to consider the results of a domestic violence assessment before dissolving certain domestic violence restraining orders when the defendant has two or more restraining orders against him, be placed on the Committees’ next agendas.

Committee Advances Connors Veterans Measure Concerning Family Burial Plots

The Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee today released a resolution (SR-25) sponsored by Senator Christopher J. Connors, who serves on the Committee, that memorializes Congress to pass H.R.2594, providing plot allowances for spouses and children of veterans who are buried in state cemeteries.

Connors, Rumpf & Gove Veteran Rental Assistance Initiative Passes Senate

The State Senate has approved legislation (S-122) sponsored by Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove (all R-Ocean/Burl./Atl.) that would require a portion of tenant-based assistance vouchers under the State Rental Assistance Program be reserved for grants to veterans.

“As the economy continues to show no sign of improvement, our Delegation feels there is a pressing need to improve veterans’ access to affordable housing opportunities,” said Senator Connors, who serves on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee. “Our veterans-centered initiative takes a sensible approach to this issue in that it would modify an existing resource to ensure that more veterans who served their country and have fallen on hard times obtain housing under the State Rental Assistance Program.”

Connors, Rumpf & Gove Request Consideration of “Cyber-Harassment” Bill

In light of the findings by a recent study, Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove, all R-Ocean/Burl./Atl., are requesting committee consideration of their legislation (S-119/A-311) that would establish the crime of “cyber-harassment” in New Jersey.

The Delegation’s request is in response to the release of a report by the National Institute of Health (NIH) which found that victims of cyber bullying may be more likely to feel depressed, socially isolated or dehumanized than victims of physical beatings and intimidations.   Today, Connors, Rumpf and Gove sent letters to the respective Chairpersons of the Senate and Assembly Judiciary Committees requesting that their legislation be posted for consideration.
